its different than windows 7, and not all features work well with screan readers yet (like the new mail client included in win 8) but overall its proven to be a decent OS by those who have stuck with it.
i was with the visually impaired group that started with the beta and on through to the RC's and beyond, and in my honest opinion, it is a decent Operating System.

Using Windows Mail (same as the one in vista) in Windows 7
On several of the lists it has been pointed out that Windows Mail, is indeed on/in the W7 Operating System files, although disabled
one of the folks out there developed some files for the restoration for usability of WM on win 7 for folks and I have them here along with his instructions. just click the link and download the zip file and you will be ready to go
a few notes!, make sure you back up your registry, and make a restore point before applying the files and fix described in this package, I'm sure the person who made this was careful, but every computer is different, so might react differently to the manipulations needed to get windows mail running on windows seven machines.
secondly, there have been a few people who had trouble downloading and installing service pack 1 for windows 7 after this modification, but... i have had no reports of this trouble if the mail fix is applied after SP-1 is installed! (
Third note, this is a newer set of files, and has an undo file for the needed registry change!)

the MDI viewer allows you to do an OCR scan of the image into a Word document, which withMS Word or Word Viewer, means we can read such items our selves
*Note: the OCR included in the MDI viewer is not of the highest quality, so such conversions are likely to have flaws, but its better than before!.

for those who are having major troubles like messed up .net update installations or who got a "great sounding" program only to find out that not only is it not so good, but it's almost impossible to get rid of, Microsoft used to make something called the "Microsoft Windows cleanup tool ". it didn't see all programs on your computer, it concentrated on Microsoft and the most OS intrusive products and gave you a way to *rip them out*, the only trouble is that the rip part is literal, if it see's it, it will pull it out by it's roots, up to and including the .net libraries and updates from Microsoft. but it's not neat and clean about it, some users of this application have found themselves with a brutally messed up system and had to format and re-install windows!
I myself have used this tool a number of times, and have! not! had! this! trouble! at! all!, but your luck and mine will not be the exact same, and neither are our computers, so I needed to give you the warning! The Microsoft Windows cleanup tool download
